Hit while parked, but not in this lot.

Kinja'd!!!

It looks like it was caught by a mirror or something. It’s a long scrape with black scuff marks which ends in a dent.

Kinja'd!!!

The damage isn’t that bad. If it were mine, I’d visit a paintless dent repair shop and have them pop it out. Instead, I get to turn it in with damage, file an insurance claim with Amex, and pick up a new vehicle. It seems like a painless process, but it will take months to resolve and I will have to deal with more paperwork.

This is my third claim on rental cars this year. The first was a broken windshield due to a rock hitting it on the freeway, the second was two broken side windows from an attempted burglary (there wasn’t anything worth stealing), and now this. I’m just thankful that none were my fault and none happened in my personal vehicle.

Time to play rental car roulette again!

No. Full size or bigger per our contract.

After the paperwork chaos after the Hertz Grand Cherokee I rented in November was hit by an idiot in Milwaukee, I am tempted to just buy the full insurance. I wonder if one is able to simply walk away. I have a Sixt rental scheduled next month where $0 deductible insurance cost almost nothing, so I opted for it. I usually take it when renting abroad.

I’m covered through my corporate AMEX, so my company won’t pay for the rental company’s insurance.

Does Amex handle full coverage insurance, or just the deductible based on existing insurance? I know the latter is how it works on the Citi card I rent with.

It’s full coverage. There’s always some back and forth between the rental company and Amex. The rental company claims loss of use and overhead costs. Amex demands proof of both. They go back and forth for a few months before the rental company finally relents on their demands and closes the claim. The first time I went through this it took over a year to settle and the rental company went after me for the things Amex wouldn’t cover without proof. We had to get our corporate lawyers involved in that one.

i was rear ended in a rental while my truck was being repaired from being rear ended. Both drivers had the same insurance company.

MY Explorer was rear ended while i was at a red light and the rental was rear ended while i was turning right into a gas station.

When I was rear ended in the rental I initially freaked out thinking i was about to get raped by the rental company for damaging one of their cars. I went off on the guy who hit me to the point that an officer doing road construction detail heard me and sprinted down the road to intervene. I quickly realized that it wasn’ t my car or my fault and apologized to the guy as the cop got to us.

Our Explorer was rear-ended twice. Well, technically, the trailer was rear-ended the second time. I wonder if there’s something about the giant wall of SUV that makes people fail to realize that it’s slowing down.

I’m glad you were able to calm yourself and didn’t end up in jail!

I remember that article. The amazing thing to me is the height of this dent. I guess people just can’t keep track of their mirrors. Every bollard I’ve seen at a drive-through is covered with  scrapes.

Even that doesn’t really match up. Mirrors fold away or break.

I remember the trailer ordeal. Yea.... I just let off a bunch of Fbombs.  I wouldn't have gotten physical.  I was with a gf that would eventually become my wife.  I guess I scared her pretty good cuz she thought I had hit a curb and didn't realize I had been hit.

I travel and rent lots of cars, mostly through Hertz, always using the corporate Amex. I always get the extra insurance (part of the company rental policy). Never had an issue with any dent scrape or otherwise. Had a window smashed in New York a few years ago and the thieves went through the whole car and just took a Android charge cable. I found it on the ground by a nearby trashcan. I called Hertz and they brought me a new car.

I think mirrors only fold back, not forward. If the person was backing out of the adjacent space, it could have been the driver’s side mirror.

Looks like a easy PDR fix, however insurance may decide to charge full cost bodywork and then do the PDR, though you won’t have to worry regardless.

Fun times.  I had Amex years ago, never had to file a claim, but the carrier moved to Citi.  The wrecked Jeep was on Citi and Hertz tried to go after me, but a fun twist is the at-fault driver who hit me was also in a Hertz car, so I rebuffed them, stating I would just go after them and their renter.  A few months later it finally was resolved, and I had nothing out of pocket.  But just for the hassle, the insurance would have been worth it.
